About Dermabrasion

Blemishes and damage build up on the skin's surface, resulting in a dull complexion with fine lines, spots, and scars. At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, dermabrasion treatments polish off the damaged and dead skin from the top layers of your complexion, revealing a younger look with even, clear skin that feels smooth and soft. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Roberto Garcia may recommend dermabrasion (sometimes called dermablading or dermaplaning) if you are looking for a quick, effective noninvasive treatment that addresses early signs of aging and boosts your skin's health. Made to even the texture and tone of your complexion, dermabrasion might be a great option for skin rejuvenation if you are not ready for facial surgery. Ideal Candidates

Dermabrasion is a good option for women and men of any age who want clearer, healthier complexions. Dermabrasion can help correct the look of small facial scars, fine lines, blotches, and spots on your skin. Since dermabrasion eliminates the damaged outer skin layers, your face will feel softer while also looking brighter and more even. Most patients find that following dermabrasion, home skin products sink in faster and perform better. If you have skin allergies, sensitive skin, or chronic fever blisters and cold sores, dermabrasion may not be appropriate. It's also important to know that dermabrasion shouldn't be done if you have a current skin outbreak, like acne, to prevent infections. Dermabrasion may be done on the whole face or a small area, as well as the chest, hands, and neck. Dermabrasion treatments may also be performed along with another procedure offered at Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, such as an injectable treatment or chemical peel, for greater rejuvenation.

Procedure Technique

Following a consultation, dermabrasion treatments will be done in one of our procedure rooms. You can lie back as your skin is prepped and cleaned for the treatment. Local anesthesia may be given to numb the needed areas prior to the procedure to help you feel more relaxed. Dermabrasion is done with a special tool that applies a spinning, roughly textured handpiece over the skin to effectively remove the surface of the skin. Dermablading and dermaplaning are done in a similar manner to dermabrasion but instead, utilizes a dermatome or surgical blade to shave off the damaged upper layers of skin. Following the treatment, debris will be removed and a moisturizer or serum will be applied to the needed areas to protect and nourish your skin. You can leave right after the treatment to continue your regular schedule.

What to Expect

Following a dermabrasion treatment, the treated skin can be red, irritated, and swollen similar to a light sunburn; however, this may be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications and creams while you heal over the next week. You need to avoid exposure to the sun and regularly apply sunscreen because the fresh skin that is revealed by the treatment will be extra sensitive. Many people notice clearer skin that is smoother — this should only get better as the skin begins to heal. To extend your improvements, talk to Dr. Roberto Garcia about how frequently you can have dermabrasion and other skin treatments to achieve your cosmetic goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dermabrasion cost?
Costs for a dermabrasion treatment will vary based on the areas you're having treated. Once your personal treatment plan is developed during your consultation, your aesthetician will discuss costs. Since skin treatments, like dermabrasion, have optimal results if they are done every 4 – 6 weeks, you might want to buy a package. Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery also has special offers every month on treatments so watch our website or ask us when you call to schedule.

What's the difference between dermabrasion, dermaplaning, and microdermabrasion?
Both dermabrasion and dermaplaning are strong resurfacing treatments, which are used to remove blemishes and minimize age-related problems. The biggest difference between dermaplaning and dermabrasion is the equipment. Dermabrasion involves a special tool that uses a material, like sandpaper, to remove the top layers of damaged skin. Dermaplaning (sometimes known as dermablading) is done with a dermatome, which is a surgical blade that scrapes off the dead layers of skin. Microdermabrasion is a less abrasive form of skin resurfacing that is ideal to remove the top layer of damaged skin for a smoother complexion.

Should I get dermabrasion or a chemical peel?
During your consult, your aesthetician will evaluate your complexion and listen to your needs and wants. After this, they will explain whether a chemical peel or dermabrasion is better for you. A medium to deep chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment are both good for treating sun damage, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and uneven texture. You might discover that you like one treatment more or that you are less sensitive after another. Talk to your aesthetician about the history of your skin, especially previous reactions or allergies.

Is dermabrasion painful?
Based on the aggressiveness of your dermabrasion, your aesthetician may apply a local skin anesthetic to minimize discomfort throughout your appointment. Following your treatment, once the anesthesia stops working, your skin may sting or feel like you have a slight sunburn. We will give you post-treatment skin care, like what cream to apply and when. Redness, inflammation, and any discomfort should fade soon as your skin recovers and your complexion is visibly improved.

Can I combine dermabrasion with other treatments?
We don't suggest combining dermabrasion with another resurfacing procedure (like laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel). However, you might benefit from getting an injectable wrinkle treatment or facial with a dermabrasion treatment. Be open with your aesthetician about your concerns in your consult so they can develop a plan that addresses everything.
