About Chin Augmentation
Mentoplasty (known as chin augmentation) is a common cosmetic treatment that recontours the chin and lower face for patients with a small and recessed chin, or one they feel is too prominent. Often when a chin is recessed and sunken in, it can create a weak profile. Several aesthetic enhancements can be performed to improve the appearance of your chin, but one of the most popular procedures is an implant to build a more prominent jawline and a more appealing profile. In Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Roberto Garcia offers several chin augmentation options. In addition to implants, which come in a number of sizes and shapes, noninvasive procedures, such as fillers or Kybella, can help add contour. For chins that are very large, genioplasty might be an option. This treatment at Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery removes bone and cartilage to reshape your chin and jaw to a more appealing size.

"It was better than I could have imagined. I healed somewhat quickly, little pain which lasted only a short time. Dr. Garcia is a magician, a plastic surgeon Houdini. He is kind and personable and listens to you. I would recommend him to all who would ask."- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Dec 15, 2019
"It’s been one month since my surgery and the results are remarkable. I look at least years younger and totally natural. There was no pain in recovery only discomfort from the swelling. I was given instructions to follow for two weeks prior to surgery and for two weeks after surgery. Honestly, the most annoying part was having to wash my hair twice a day for the first week. Dr. Garcia and Erin were only a phone call away whenever I had any questions. My initial consultation and all of my visits were on time, informative and I never felt rushed or pressured. I am so impressed with Dr. Garcia’s work and knowledge. I never had surgery before and was a little apprehensive but confident that I would be in good hands under his care and I am so fortunate to have found him."- M.G. / Google / Nov 14, 2019
Mentoplasty is a procedure for men, as well as women. If you are displeased by the look of your chin and do not like the undefined profile it offers, this treatment can improve the lower region of your facial structure. It's also fairly common for our patients to add a rhinoplasty with their chin augmentation procedure. This combination of facial treatments offers excellent results for the reshaping of the prominent structures of your face, offering balance.
During chin enhancement surgery, general or IV anesthesia will be administered before Dr. Garcia creates an incision beneath your chin. In this incision, a groove or pocket is created to keep the implant device in its proper place. Simultaneously, Dr. Garcia will reduce some of your chin's tissue, cartilage, and bone to create grooves that will hold the implant securely in place. The chin implant is placed through the incision and positioned on top of the bone, just below your lower lip. Sometimes, the incision can be created inside the lower lip where it connects to your gumline. Both types of incisions help to conceal scars. Small sutures are used to close the incisions, and the bottom portion of your face will be wrapped with bandages.
What to Expect
Chin augmentation yields immediate, noticeable results, which is typically very exciting for our patients. Even though swelling and discoloration will be present following your surgery, this will subside. For the majority of patients, chin augmentation takes about a couple of weeks of healing. Exercise should not be performed within this timeframe. This particular surgery has very high success rates and because you have chosen a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Garcia, your outcome will be balanced and defined.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does chin augmentation cost?
Dr. Garcia can begin to estimate your costs for chin surgery during your initial consultation as soon as your surgical plan is developed. Your cost will be based on the size and type of chin implant you select, plus surgical, anesthesia, and facility fees. A surgery, like a chin implant, can produce beautiful, long-lasting results so it is better to concentrate on finding a surgeon you trust who has proven results and years of experience, like Dr. Garcia, rather than the lowest cost. Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery accepts several payments and can provide information on low-interest financing, which can make your surgery more affordable.
Will augmentation fix my double chin?
Chin augmentation is meant to give you a stronger, sharper look. If you are concerned about a double chin, you might prefer neck liposuction to have the excess fat in your submental area (the upper neck below the jawline) addressed. Occasionally, neck liposuction on its own can give you a better jawline and appearance without a chin implant. Dr. Garcia will explain your choices and his suggestions at your consultation.
Can I combine other facial surgeries with chin augmentation?
Many people undergo chin augmentation along with another facial surgery, such as cheek implants or nose reshaping surgery. Dr. Garcia can help you choose the procedures that best fit your concerns and aesthetic goals during your initial consultation. It might be challenging to decide by yourself what procedure(s) would be best for you, which is why your first appointment with Dr. Garcia is so crucial. He will use his years of experience to help you decide on an individualized treatment plan.
Are there nonsurgical procedures to improve my chin?
For stubborn fat in your neck that can cause a double chin, Kybella injectable can improve the appearance of your chin without surgery. Kybella has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to eliminate fat in your upper neck (the submental area). Kybella can be administered during chin surgery to provide optimal results. If you are concerned about your double chin, tell Dr. Garcia during your consultation so he can discuss your options and recommend treatment.
What's the difference between mentoplasty and genioplasty?
A mentoplasty is a surgery that increases the size of your chin. On the other hand, genioplasty is a procedure that reconstructs the chin bone, often to decrease the size. Based on the state of your chin, as well as your goals, you might require both surgeries or one. A genioplasty, in addition to being a cosmetic procedure, may also be performed to improve medical concerns, like your dental bite. Dr. Garcia can help you choose whether to get a mentoplasty, genioplasty, or both.
