An Expression All Your Own

There’s a lot of personality in the way your eyes crease when you smile. If you’re considering eyelid surgery, it’s natural to want to keep that familiar expression while making a change that feels right for you. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can open up a heavy upper lid or soften the fullness beneath your eyes, with the goal of helping you feel comfortable with the way you look.

At Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery, we make time for that conversation. Dr. Roberto Garcia helps Jacksonville patients work through what they’d like to change, what they want to preserve, and how an eyelid lift could help. We’ll talk through your options at our Ponte Vedra Beach practice, so you can picture the possibilities and understand what comes with them.

What Is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess eyelid skin and removes or repositions fat around the eyes. It can address the upper lids, the lower lids, or both. For someone with skin hanging over the upper eyelid crease, that may mean a more open appearance. For someone with under-eye bags, it may mean a smoother contour beneath the eyes.

The first step is understanding what’s causing the concern. Sagging skin, a low brow, and a drooping eyelid can look similar, but they call for different treatment. Dr. Garcia will help you sort through those differences before recommending surgery.

Types of Eyelid Surgeries

Upper eyelid surgery focuses on the fold of skin above your eye and any fatty tissue contributing to fullness. Upper blepharoplasty can make the crease easier to see and reduce skin that hangs toward the lashes.

Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) treats bags and loose skin beneath the eyes. Removing or repositioning tissue can soften the bulge and help the lower eyelid blend more smoothly into the cheek.

Asian eyelid surgery, also called double eyelid surgery, focuses on the upper eyelid crease. Your existing anatomy and the appearance you prefer guide the discussion. Be open about the features you want to preserve as well as the changes you’re considering.

Ptosis repair treats an upper eyelid whose edge sits too low over the eye because of a problem with the lid’s lifting mechanism. Removing a fold of skin won’t correct that on its own. If Dr. Garcia identifies ptosis, he’ll explain how it affects your treatment options.

What Are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

An eyelid lift can make a focused change to a small but expressive part of your face. Depending on your needs, benefits may include:

  • A more open upper eyelid area after removing excess upper eyelid skin.
  • Reduced puffiness and bags beneath the eyes.
  • A smoother lower eyelid contour.
  • A more visible upper eyelid crease, which can make applying eye makeup easier.
  • Improved peripheral vision when excess upper lid skin is blocking it.

You may want help with one of these concerns or several. During consultation, we’ll talk about the improvement you’re hoping for and where eyelid surgery has limits, including wrinkles or discoloration that may need another treatment.

Am I a Candidate for a Blepharoplasty in Jacksonville?

If upper lid hooding, under-eye bags, or loose eyelid skin are bothering you, a consultation can help you find out if surgery is a good fit. Good candidates are healthy enough to heal, don’t smoke, and have realistic expectations about the changes surgery can achieve. Your age alone won’t tell us which approach is right.

Dr. Garcia will look at your eyelids and the surrounding area while you explain your concerns. For example, a low eyebrow can push skin down toward the upper lid. In that case, a brow lift may be part of the discussion. Understanding where the heaviness begins helps avoid treating only part of the problem.

Please tell us about dry eyes, glaucoma, thyroid disease, previous eye surgery, or trouble closing your eyes. Bring a list of medications and supplements, too. An eye condition or a health issue that affects healing may need attention before surgery, and an eye specialist’s evaluation may be recommended.

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

Once you have a plan, we’ll help you prepare for surgery and the first days at home.

  • Complete any medical evaluations requested for your procedure.
  • Review medications and supplements with the team. Make changes to blood thinners or other prescribed medication only with guidance from your prescribing clinician and surgeon.
  • Follow your instructions about smoking, fasting, and care before surgery.
  • Arrange a ride home and someone to help during early recovery. Plan transportation to follow-up visits if you’ll need it.

How Is a Blepharoplasty in Jacksonville Performed?

Your blepharoplasty procedure may involve the upper and lower eyelids together or focus on just one area. We’ll go over the anesthesia plan beforehand so you know what to expect. Local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia may be considered, depending on the work involved and any other procedures being performed.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Garcia makes an incision along the natural crease, where the resulting scar can blend into the eyelid’s existing fold. Through that opening, he removes excess skin and adjusts fatty tissue as needed before closing the incision.

The amount of tissue removed depends on your anatomy. You’ll have a chance to discuss the proposed change and how it relates to your eyelid shape. Scars take time to fade, and their final appearance varies from person to person.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

For the lower eyelids, Dr. Garcia assesses both the bulging tissue and the skin over it. He may remove excess skin and remove or reposition excess fat to improve the contour. Ask about the incision he recommends and what that approach can accomplish for you.

In lower eyelid surgery, an incision beneath the lash line allows access to excess skin. Another approach uses an incision inside the lid, called a transconjunctival incision, to address fat without removing skin through that opening. The choice depends on what needs correction; your consultation is the place to establish which technique is suitable.

What Is Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

Give yourself some breathing room after eyelid surgery. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness are expected early on, and your eyes may feel dry or irritated. Ointment can blur your vision, so arrange help with driving and give yourself a break from activities that require clear sight.

Many patients get back to normal daily activities in about two weeks. Feeling ready for a short outing can come before feeling ready for a busy workday or a workout. Vigorous exercise may need to wait until around four weeks, and combined procedures can mean a longer recovery. Avoid strenuous activity until Dr. Garcia clears you to resume it.

  • The first few days: Rest, use cold compresses, and keep your head elevated as instructed. Follow the eye-care routine you’ve been given.
  • Around two weeks: Swelling and bruising may have eased enough for more of your usual routine. You may still have visible signs of healing.
  • Around four weeks: Check with Dr. Garcia before returning to strenuous activity. Some swelling or firmness can remain.
  • Over the following months: The eyelids continue to settle, and incision lines mature, making the final results easier to assess.

We’ll explain incision care, medication instructions, and follow-up visits before you go home. Stitches that need removal are generally taken out around the first week. Wear glasses until you’re cleared to use contact lenses, and protect the area from sun exposure with dark sunglasses outdoors.

If you have severe or worsening pain, significant swelling, bleeding, or a change in vision, contact the surgical team. Sudden vision loss needs urgent medical care.

Blepharoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a blepharoplasty cost in Jacksonville?

Your estimate depends on the work involved. Treating just the upper lids differs from treating the lower lids or combining both. Anesthesia, facility charges, and additional procedures can also affect the total. Once your plan is established, we can explain the costs and what’s included. You can also review our financing options and ask about current terms and eligibility.

Can eyelid surgery improve vision?

It can help when excess upper lid skin blocks part of your visual field. New vision symptoms still need medical evaluation. Functional eyelid surgery may qualify for insurance coverage if your plan’s criteria are met, while cosmetic surgery is generally excluded. Check with your insurer and ask us about billing policies before making arrangements.

Will blepharoplasty fix wrinkles, crow’s feet, or dark circles?

It depends on what’s causing them. Surgery can smooth loose eyelid skin and reduce bags, but pigmentation and expression lines can remain. Botox may help with crow’s feet, and selected skin treatments may be considered for texture or discoloration. We’ll help you understand which concern each option addresses.

What are the risks associated with eyelid surgery?

Risks include bleeding, infection, anesthesia reactions, scarring, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, and changes in eyelid position. Further surgery may be needed. Vision changes can occur, including a very rare risk of permanent vision loss. We’ll review the risks of your proposed procedure and how your health may affect them, with time for you to ask questions before deciding.

What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?

If you’re hoping to improve expression lines, skin quality, or certain areas of lost volume, nonsurgical treatment may be worth discussing. Injectables and skin treatments won’t remove a fold of excess eyelid skin or correct bulging fat in the same way surgery can. Tell us what you’d like help with and how you feel about surgery and downtime.

Will eyelid surgery change my eye shape?

Because surgery changes tissue around the eyes, it can affect their appearance. Let Dr. Garcia know which features you want to preserve and any asymmetry you’ve noticed. He can explain how eyelid support and tissue removal factor into your plan. An unchanged eye shape can’t be guaranteed.

How long do blepharoplasty results last?

The improvement can last for years, though your face will continue to age naturally. Skin quality, sun exposure, health, and the original procedure all play a part. If you notice changes later, a follow-up visit can help you understand what’s happening and if further treatment would be useful.
