Examining How the Lower Face Ages

The lower face ages in a very predictable manner. After decades of studying this very issue, specialists like Dr. Garcia have found simple ways to address the signs of aging in this area. The lower face has two components: the upper zone (from the temple to the jawline) and the lower zone (from the jawline to the collar bones).

It was once thought that the midface (upper zone) aged inward to the nose, thereby justifying the “pulled” look, where one would look like they were stretched beyond normal. Of consequence, studies conducted in the last 20 years have indicated that the face in fact falls down and in towards the mouth, causing the downturn of the mouth, the marionette lines, the jowls, and the area adjacent to that called the pre-jowl sulcus to form. Aging to the lower face (lower zone) manifests itself as two vertical bands in the neck and loose skin to the lower neck.

The treatment for aging in the lower face is relatively straightforward. That is, we reverse the signs of aging by working in the opposing direction to the aging process. If the cheek falls down and in, we lift it up and out. If the neck has fallen down and the bands have split in the middle, we lift it by tightening the bands.
