Whether you were born with slim lips or you are noticing less fullness in your lips as you get older, nonsurgical or surgical lip augmentation may help create a full, well-shaped pout. Surgical lip augmentation may be done with implants, dermal fillers, or SMAS augmentation to create the shape you want.
Surgical lip augmentation can create beautiful results that are long-lasting. For nonsurgical lip augmentation, there are several injectable fillers that can temporarily volumize the mouth for a fuller look. If you are interested in learning more about surgical and nonsurgical augmentation, contact Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL to schedule an initial consultation. Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Roberto Garcia will discuss your options and create your personal treatment plan for lip augmentation.
Providing the most lasting results, silicone implants may be added to the lower and/or upper lips to improve the volume and shape of your mouth.
Injectable fillers, such as Restylane or Juvéderm, can add temporary volume to the mouth and decrease the visibility of fine lip lines.
SMAS lip augmentation is a type of grafting surgery that is created from facial muscles and is usually performed on patients who are also having a facelift procedure. SMAS stands for superficial musculoaponeurotic system, which is a group of facial muscles that extend from the collarbone to the top of your head. These muscles are extracted during a surgical procedure and then strategically incorporated during your lip augmentation.
Nonsurgical or surgical lip enhancement can give you more voluminous lips and a shapelier mouth. Based on your concerns and goals, you may select lip augmentation surgery for results that last a long time or nonsurgical fillers to avoid recovery time. It may be best to begin with injectable fillers to understand how your lips will look after augmentation surgery. Ideal candidates for lower and/or upper lip enhancement at Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery:
It is important to pay attention to the recovery instructions given by the Contoura team to expedite healing and amplify results. After either a nonsurgical or surgical lip enhancement, your mouth will most likely feel tender or sore for several days.
If you had a SMAS augmentation with a facelift, you should expect your entire face to be tender also. Cold packs and pain relievers are suggested to address any swelling and discomfort. The improvements from nonsurgical lip augmentation may be visible for about 3 – 12 months based on the technique selected for your procedure. Lip augmentation surgery will give you long-lasting improvements.
The approach taken during the procedure will vary, depending on the chosen course of treatment:
Minimally invasive lip enhancement may be achieved with dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Juvéderm. Injections can be done in one of our treatment rooms as an outpatient procedure. Based on the brand of dermal filler selected, a local anesthetic may be part of the formula or else a numbing cream may be applied to the treated area. Once your lips are cleaned, multiple injections will be administered in the selected areas and then the filler will be massaged to provide optimal results. You will be allowed to leave immediately after your treatment to continue your regular routine.
Typically done in conjunction with a facelift procedure, SMAS lip augmentation requires the use of muscle tissue that needs to be harvested prior to your lip procedure. Dr. Garcia will carefully extract this tissue in one piece so that he can carefully use it for the surgery. Once the tissue harvesting is complete, small incisions will be made on each corner of your mouth where Dr. Garcia will create small pockets within the top and lower lips to allow for the tissue to be inserted. This procedure is typically done under local or IV sedation anesthesia and takes around three hours to complete when combined with a facelift.
A thin incision will be created at the corner of the lips so the implant(s) can be inserted. It can take weeks for swelling to subside and the implant(s) to settle into position; however, implants in the lips will give you improvements that last for years.

Many Jacksonville lip augmentation patients come in and request the pout of a specific actor or actress. Having pictures of lips you want will help Dr. Garcia understand your goals; however, it can be unrealistic to create the lips of someone else. During your first appointment, Dr. Garcia will listen to your wants before talking about your choices (dermal fillers, SMAS, or implants) to augment your lips. After that, he will create your personal treatment plan.
Based on your specific goals, Dr. Garcia can help you choose between implants, dermal fillers, and SMAS for your augmentation. If you're uncertain about which option you want, dermal fillers might be your best option. This could help you understand what your lips would look like following lip augmentation. At your initial consultation, Dr. Garcia will explain the benefits and drawbacks of each of your choices so you may choose which one you want.
Implants are made from a silicone material that is designed to feel and look natural. With his years of training, Dr. Garcia inserts lip implants so your results will appear natural but impressive. During your initial consultation, he will go over the shape and size of lower and/or upper implants to meet your needs and goals. In 2 – 3 months, the implants will settle into place and the swelling will be gone, revealing your results.
Typically, patients are very happy with their lip augmentation. Although, if you're not happy with your results, you may have your implants taken out. If you're uncertain about lip implants, Dr. Garcia might recommend dermal fillers since they're minimally invasive. For dermal fillers, the formula will eventually absorb into your body so your lips will return to their normal appearance.
"Good morning all! I just have to say that I think the staff and Dr. Garcia are just wonderful! Brooks is amazing at administering the Botox for me! She is a joy and very professional. My next step I’m going to have done are my deflated lips. Lol! As we all know we loose our volume as we get older. So I’m saving up. Can’t wait. Then.....the big guns, the Contoura face lift. Now I will really have to save up for that. I will say this I have seen results, before and afters. It is truly amazing. I would highly recommend Dr. Garcia and Brooks for all your facial needs.
