Good morning everyone. It's Dr. Garcia again, talking to you from Contoura Facial Plastic Surgery. Today I wanted to talk to you about a question that I get asked often, is what's important in choosing the correct facial plastic surgeon for a rhinoplasty procedure? I can tell you that throughout the years, I've been doing rhinoplasty now for over 20 years, and I've found that not only is it a very humbling procedure for the surgeon, but without doubt it is the most gratifying procedure for our patients. Majority of our rhinoplasty patients are probably on the younger side. We perform anywhere from one to three rhinoplasties a week. I'm going to tell you something, that the look that these young patients have when they first see their nose after the surgery, it brings tears to your eyes. It's so emotionally charged. Seeing how their look changes, how their confidence changes, the way they perceive others changes, their ability to do more for others I think is the biggest thing.

That's the thing that really brings so much joy to me as their surgeon. A couple things that I've found over the years that really help us to find the right appearance for a patient. Number one, none of our noses look the same. They're all unique to the person. Because every person's face is unique. No one has the same internal and external parts to their nose. We have found that if you tailor-make each nose so that it balances with the remainder of the face, i.e., attention is taken to the most appealing parts of the face and is taken away from the nose. See, the nose is really an organ, right? It was given to us so that we would breathe and we would smell. As we're obligate nasal breathers, we use our mouth to eat and speak. We need our nose to do the former functions.

If it's not breathing, then it's a dysfunctionally well-appearing nose. The first thing that we always strive for is a nose that works well. After that, we then look at the aesthetics of the nose and we say, "Okay, how can we make this nose balanced with this particular face so that attention is drawn to the more appealing features of the face?" That's really been the cornerstone of our success. Now, what things do I think are important for choosing the right rhinoplasty surgeon is experience. That's first and foremost. You don't want somebody who does a rhinoplasty once a month. You don't want somebody who reads about a rhinoplasty in an article or who goes to a meeting, learns a technique about around a rhinoplasty, then comes back and is practicing on you.

Believe it or not, most general plastic surgeons, individuals who don't specialize in the nose, do not perform the best rhinoplasties. The best rhinoplasties are performed by specialists. Because it's all about experience. It's all about this procedure repeatedly being done and finding tweaks and finding ways to make it better each time. That is the most important thing I find to choosing the right rhinoplasty surgeon.
